Abstract: World AIDS Day, 1 December every year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic. The HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 21st century poses one of the greatest challenges for public health in the global community. HIV prevalence in Zanzibar is concentrated among specific Key Populations likely to engage in high risk behaviors for HIV acquisition, and the potential for cross-over (bridging) to the general population is documented. Ms. Aisha Karume, will review the major causes/factors fueling the epidemic, and policies and strategies used in fighting HIV/AIDS in Zanzibar, as well as the impact of HIV/AIDS on the education sector particularly among youth in schools necessary for the MoEVT to develop sound strategic response to the epidemic.
Ms. Karume is a Program Manager at ZAYADESA implementing projects with ICAP, UNFPA and UNICEF that focus on comprehensive HIV prevention services, and promotion of treatment, care and support services especially among youth Key Populations (KPs) in Zanzibar. Herbackground and interest on the topic was further developed at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services through specialized coursework offered as part of its international health promotion program. At Mnazi Mmoja Referral Hospital, she evaluated health care workers' basic knowledge about HIV/AIDS, the routes of transmission, prevention and universal precautions.
Tea, Coffee and Snacks will also be served freely.
